Svoboda 1945: Liberation is an adventure game by Czech studio Charles Games, follow-up to their award-winning Attentat 1942. It blends point-and-click adventure mechanics with full-motion video interviews of real actors playing witnesses, plus historically grounded interactive memories of the chaotic post-WW2 era in Czechoslovakia.

You're sent to the small village of Svoboda near the Czech-German border to investigate an old feud. The trail quickly connects to World War II and the rise of the communist dictatorship that followed. During the investigation, you find a photograph of your own grandfather. What was he doing here, and was he complicit?

The FMV interviews are the game's distinctive feature. Every choice in dialogue matters — how do you approach someone who lost a friend on the battlefield, or a woman returning to the place she was expelled from as a child? Atmospheric mini-games let you relive the witnesses' specific memories: developing old photographs, holding a farm together under communist terror, playing cards on the eve of historic elections.

The script was written in cooperation with a team of professional historians. The game is full of period-accurate footage, materials, and memorabilia. The central question — whether the horrors of war can justify the violence that followed — is left for the player to answer.
