Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China opens a trilogy that carries players across three civilizations and eras, each centered on a different assassin pursuing revenge, retribution or redemption. This first entry takes place in 1526 as the Ming dynasty begins to fall apart, and casts players as Shao Jun, the sole survivor of the Chinese Brotherhood. Trained by the legendary Ezio Auditore, she returns home determined to avenge her fallen order and rebuild it.

The game reimagines the series in 2.5D, presenting its world as a series of living paintings that blend sixteenth-century Chinese brushwork with a more impressionistic, contemporary style. Players move across China and its famous landmarks, stalking foes from the rooftops of the Forbidden City and slipping through the shadows of the Great Wall while crossing paths with notable historical figures.

Stealth is paramount: players scout, sneak and hide to avoid detection, using whistles and disguises to fool enemies before striking and escaping. When discovered, Shao Jun can fight openly with martial arts, her Kian sword and a hidden shoe blade. Navigation runs across foreground, middle and background planes, letting players choose paths to open new routes, take on side missions, collect hidden items or reach a target quickly.
