Obscure

Obscure is a classic-format survival horror built around five students at Leafmore High, the kind of unremarkable American high school that turns out to have been the source of unexplained disappearances for years. One of their friends goes missing; the rest decide to investigate after the building locks up for the night.

Each of the five — Shannon, Kenny, Ashley, Stan and Josh — carries a unique ability that comes into play as you swap between them. Combat covers the usual horror toolkit, from baseball bats up through handguns and shotguns, and the puzzles lean on classic adventure-game logic: keys, items, the right thing applied in the right place. Same-screen cooperative play lets two players take half the party each.

The soundtrack from award-winning composer Olivier Derivière is one of the things that lifted Obscure above the budget-shelf release it could easily have been. It's slower and more deliberate than a lot of mid-2000s horror, with the school itself doing most of the work as an antagonist before any of the actual monsters appear.
