Resident Evil 4 (2005)

Resident Evil 4 is Capcom's 2005 entry in the franchise that effectively rewrote the rules of action-horror gaming and influenced every third-person shooter for the next decade. Six years after the events of Resident Evil 2, special agent Leon S. Kennedy is sent on a mission to rescue Ashley Graham, the U.S. President's daughter, who has been kidnapped by a mysterious cult. The trail leads to a rural village in Europe, where the locals have been infected by a parasitic organism called Las Plagas — a deliberate departure from the franchise's traditional zombies.

The over-the-shoulder camera, the modular aiming system, the contextual button prompts during cinematic moments, and the inventory grid-tetris are all design innovations that the 2005 release introduced as a coherent system. Combat is paced around managing limited ammunition against enemies who are smarter, faster and more aggressive than the previous games' zombie populations. Villagers, cultists, the chainsaw-wielding Dr Salvador, and a long bench of stranger threats keep the encounter design from settling into a single rhythm.

The Steam release is the 2014 PC re-release with HD presentation, 60 FPS support, wide-screen optimisation, sharpened text, upgraded character and environment textures, Steam achievements, Cloud saves, trading cards, global leaderboards and full game-controller support. Native keyboard and mouse support with customisable bindings is included. The bonus content from prior iterations — most notably the Separate Ways epilogue starring Ada Wong alongside the main Leon campaign — is bundled in, and the package remains the version of RE4 that long-time PC fans recommend even after the 2023 remake.
