About Stronghold HD (2012)
Stronghold HD is the high-resolution reissue of the original 2001 castle sim from Firefly Studios — the game that essentially defined the medieval castle-builder subgenre. You design and build a working fortification from the keep outward, then either defend it or assault somebody else's, and the economy underneath the walls is just as much of the game as the siege itself. Farms feed peasants, peasants staff workshops, workshops produce weapons, and any link in that chain can be choked off by a competent attacker.
The single-player campaign runs 21 story missions across two arcs as you try to reunite medieval England against four caricatured renegades — the Rat, the Pig, the Snake and the Wolf — each leaning on a different exploitable weakness. A parallel economic campaign drops the combat and tasks you with hitting resource quotas under time pressure, and Siege That! offers standalone reconstructions of historical castle attacks for when you want a fixed scenario instead of a sandbox.
The HD layer is mostly about visibility: a new zoomed-out battlefield view lets you see an entire map on one screen and command troops in real time without the original's tight camera, and resolutions scale up to modern monitors. The reissue also restores compatibility with current Windows versions, adds Steam Cloud saves, and keeps eight-player multiplayer for sieges against other humans.
