About Contradiction Spot The Liar

Contradiction: Spot The Liar is a fully live-action murder-mystery adventure game by Tim Follin where the entire game runs on FMV — characters, scenery, and gameplay are all video. The premise is straightforward: a young woman has died under suspicious circumstances in a small English village, you arrive as the investigating detective, and the entire population of the village has reasons to be evasive about exactly what happened.

The game's central mechanic is built around contradictions. You explore the environment freely, gather evidence by clicking on objects and locations, witness events as they unfold around you, and — most importantly — interview the village's inhabitants by selecting evidence items to ask them about. The interview transcripts accumulate, and you can pair any two pieces of testimony or evidence together to see whether they contradict each other. When you catch a suspect in a contradiction, they have to face their own inconsistency — and the game watches them try to worm out of it.

The execution is what makes the system work. Every character is an actual actor performing every line of dialogue across the dozens of states an interrogation can branch into, and the resulting performances range from genuinely convincing to deliciously absurd depending on which characters you push. The game works best plugged into a TV with a group of friends helping spot the lies, but plays just as well alone. Movement is as smooth as a 3D graphic game; the FMV is structurally integrated rather than just cutscene material. A French-subtitle community localisation by Pierre-Laurent Batut is available on a beta branch.
