Evergate

Evergate is a haunting 2D puzzle platformer set in a stunning hand-drawn afterlife. Ki, a lost soul, awakens needing to reach the Evergate to return to Earth. Her path back is blocked, and she must decipher her mysterious connection to a kindred spirit by navigating memories of times past.

The core mechanic is the Soulflame: an ancient afterlife power letting Ki slow down time, take aim, and fire a beam of energy at white surfaces known as The Source. The Soulflame can smash through mysterious crystals scattered throughout each memory, unleashing their power to soar to new heights, reach previously unreachable areas, and safely navigate perilous environments. Hitting multiple crystals at once combines their energies for creative routing solutions.

85 challenging stages span the campaign, with each new memory introducing variations on the Soulflame mechanic. Collecting Essences by reaching all areas within memories unlocks ancient artefacts and boosts Ki's attributes for faster movement, higher jumps and greater powers. The orchestrated soundtrack was recorded by a live orchestra. Stone Lantern Games, a four-person Boston team of MIT graduates, developed the project with each engineer specializing in visual effects, art, music or narrative.
