About If On A Winter's Night, Four Travelers

If On A Winter's Night, Four Travelers is a narrative-driven point-and-click adventure in four acts, set across a masked ball taking place aboard a train somewhere in the late 1920s. Four passengers each carry their own slowly unfolding story — none of them quite a horror story in the genre sense, all of them with something dark, troubling and personal at their centre. The framing device of the train and the ball lets the four pieces sit in the same world without forcing them into the same plot.

In The Silent Room, Carlo waits in a luxurious Roman hotel for his lover Patrick, with the encroaching shadow of fascism making the secrecy of their meetings increasingly unbearable. In The Slow Vanishing of Lady Winterbourne, a widow buries herself in laudanum while letters from would-be heirs pile up at the door. In The Nameless Ritual, Dr Jordan Samuels turns to the occult to settle scores with the colleagues who've humiliated him, and finds himself face to face with what the occult demands in return. In the framing chapter If On A Winter's Night, Laylah finds her job tedious enough to consider an act of small rebellion against employers powerful enough to make that decision dangerous.

The game is the work of two people — Laura Hunt on coding, writing, music and sound design, Thomas Möhring on art, animations and cutscenes — and the constrained scope is part of what makes it work. The pixel art is intentionally compact, the writing is precise, and the short runtime keeps each story at exactly the length it needs to land. The whole experience is free, which the creators have leaned into as a deliberate choice rather than a marketing gimmick.
