About Peaks of Yore
Peaks of Yore is a first-person physics-based climbing game set in 1887, with all the Victorian-era period flavour the date implies. The world, called The Great Gales, is a chain of boulders, cliffs and mountains laid out as a peak-bagging adventure — every summit is a separate route to study, every hold reacts differently to your grip, and the esteemed Official Ascension Society is keeping notes on whether you're good enough to graduate to the next category of mountaineering.
The physics aren't forgiving. Holds vary in stability, your arms genuinely tire, and small mistakes cascade into long falls in a way most climbing games avoid simulating honestly. Routes are learned by trial and error — the game's stance is that mountains aren't fair or unfair, just dangerous — and unlocking new climbing gear is what shifts the harder peaks from impossible into merely difficult.
Between climbs you return to your cabin, the game's quiet hub, which you fill with trinkets gathered on expeditions and where the soundtrack and 19th-century-style monochrome art do most of the atmospheric work. A Colorful Mode adds a brighter palette if you'd rather not climb in sepia. Optional modes raise the stakes — You Fall You Die enforces permadeath, Free Solo strips your safety gear entirely — and the Peak Level Editor with Steam Workshop support lets the community design and share their own routes.
