About Ugly
Ugly is structured as a psycho-dark fairy tale told through puzzle rooms. The protagonist is a tormented nobleman exploring the desolated recesses of his own mind. The signature mechanic is the mirror — you can create a shadowy reflection of yourself and swap places with it at will, opening up puzzles that require occupying two positions in space simultaneously.
The gameplay vocabulary covers mirror-swap puzzles, towering boss fights, and the slow accumulation of a deeply tragic backstory the game presents only in fragments. Some puzzles have multiple solutions, so individual playthroughs can vary in how they approach the same rooms. Skill, strategy, and patience all factor into different rooms differently — there's no single optimal approach that works everywhere.
Secrets are hidden throughout the palace — hidden rooms, lore fragments, hints about your past, fully reachable only through careful exploration. The art style is detailed and animated with the care a fairy tale deserves. After completing all puzzle rooms to reach the interactive ending, finding every hidden room unlocks an alternate ending. The mirror reveals all, the game's framing notes, but sometimes the truth is ugly — which is what gives the game its name.
