About Mainframe Defenders
Mainframe Defenders is a turn-based tactics game with an 80s terminal-PC aesthetic and a hybrid synthwave soundtrack. A computer virus has infiltrated the Stargazer research complex and seized most of its robotic units, and you lead a squad of four prototypes on a mission to defend the complex mainframe.
The heart of the game is gear. Items don't just hand out stat boosts, since each carries distinct mechanics and, crucially, drawbacks. Building a squad works much like building a deck in a card game: you combine items with unique abilities, and you can either work around their flaws or deliberately lean into them to create a flawed but powerful build. Diverse tactics are all viable, from overheating enemies and melting them with corrosion to burying them in bullets, absorbing damage or returning fire, but no single strategy carries you, because enemy units are designed to counter specific approaches.
Missions string hand-made rooms together with procedural generation for random levels, varied objectives and unique conditions. Win or lose, the run feeds a progression system that unlocks new units, each with its own upgrades and loadouts, and new items to fuel fresh strategies. Through it all, the order stands: defend the Mainframe.
