About POOLS
POOLS is a walking sim with no UI, no dialogue, no background music, and no monsters. The game is built entirely on the texture of liminal space: empty tiled rooms, fluorescent lights, water at unexpected levels, the deep silence that makes you start listening for things that aren't there. Six chapters span 10 to 30 minutes each, with the rooms changing visually and tonally between them.
The atmosphere uses environmental audio in place of a score. Footsteps and echo shift based on the room you're in. Walking through water slows you down. The sound of one's own breathing becomes the only consistent companion. The result is oppressive not because anything will jump out at you — the developer is explicit that nothing will — but because the architecture itself plays on fears of getting lost, the dark, and tight spaces.
The project takes inspiration from Jared Pike's original Poolrooms concept, Matt Studios' Poolrooms videos, Mortain Colors, Andrew Quist's Anemoiapolis, and Kane Pixels' Backrooms found-footage work. POOLS sits at the polished end of that genre — closer to an art gallery than a horror game, but with enough mystery to keep you walking forward.
